Live Action Toy Story: Jonason's Movies - Independent Film Case Study

''The Live Action Pixar Toy Story movie, shot-for-shot, with real people and real toys.''

The second film case study that we are going to do is the 'Live Action Toy Story' feature length film which was released on YouTube to watch for free. This film was made by two consumers of the Toy Story film trilogy, and they decided that they wanted to recreate the original Toy Story, shot by shot in real life with real people and toys, turning them into producers which technically makes them 'Prosumers'.

How has online media developed?

What has been the internet of the internet on media production?

Jonason Movies used YouTube as a free platform to distrubute their film, they also built a fanbase using YouTube before the actual films release by uploading production updates and announcement videos. In this particular announcement video, Jonason and Jesse announce the project, and also ask their audience if they have any of the props or toys that were in the original animation. They also discuss how the film won't be uploaded to YouTube, due to it being too long and the problems with copyright, they say that they will just send it to pixar, as it is their movie. However since this announcement video was uploaded in May 2011, YouTube has allowed any length of video to be uploaded, so in January 2012, the full length film was uploaded to YouTube.

How is consumer behaviour and audience response transformed by online media, in relation to the past?

The film turned the two filmmakers into producers, from being consumers of the film, which makes them prosumers within the film industry. In the past it would have been difficuly to produce a feature length film on a shoe string budget, however the internet has allowed this to happen.

With the addition of being able to comment on the YouTube video, consumers can now become critics of the film, they can comment with their viewpoints towards the film and top comments can be picked to be featured by the consumers themselves.

To what extent has convergence transformed the media?

The convergence of film, blogs and news websites are what made the film successful on YouTube. The two filmmakers did interviews with every website that asked them to, which increased the exposure of their film.

Just a small selection of the Google results when you search for 'live action toy story'.
